About Us

For several years, educators working within the framework of the existent education association had heard less and less about education for children and more and more about negotioation, agency shop, confrontation and strikes.  A group of educators disagreeing with these goals formed a new teacher organization.

West Virginia Professional Educators, Inc. was organized and chartered in 1980 to give West Virginia teachers, administrators, and other friends of education a clear choice in professional membership.

WVPE has emerged as a viable growing organization in West Virginia because of its unswerving commitment to these principles:

  • We believe that education’s first duty is to the student.
  • We believe that every student has the right to an uninterrupted quality education, free from strikes or any other work stoppage tactics or coercive threats.
  • We believe all educators should be free from all forms of compulsory membership and should not be forced to join a national labor union in order to teach or to hold membership in their local or state professional association.
  • We believe in an all-inclusive membership dedicated to promoting good relationships among teachers, administrators, school board members, local and state legislators, and the general public.
  • We believe in and are committed to the continued enhancement of professional status.

Independent professional associations, similar to WVPE, exist in 22 states and represent approximately 300,000 educators.  These independent associations have formed a national coalition entitled the Coalition of Independent Education Associations (CIEA) to which WVPE belongs.
